Our Winter Art Show

City dwellers confidently ventured into parks at night in 1881, when Fernand Harvey Lungren painted his extraordinary composition in lights and darks, Shadows on the Snow . Gas lamps send up an eerie glow in the distance, but the snow itself seems to light the picture. Lungren studied briefly under Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia and then moved to New York, where he worked as an illustrator for Scribner’s Monthly . He went on to study in France and worked in association with Whistler, but this very early work may well be his best.
